Debenhams

Debenhams, which has been known under this name since 1905, can look back on a history spanning over 200 years. Since then the company has developed to become one of the largest chain stores in Great Britain employing 29,000 in its branches all over the world. Its product range includes fashion for men, women and children plus accessories. In its online shop customers can order and have goods delivered to over 40 countries.

Project aim

The plan was to reorganise the Debenham DC in Northampton. Hanging goods were to be transported by trolleys into the suspended goods bays and stored. A manual solution was deemed expedient as it promised flexibility with a relatively low investment outlay. Peak times were to be covered by staff.

Solution

A mini-trolley system was used. Incoming goods can be unloaded directly from the HGV onto the mini-trolleys thanks to a rail that can be lengthened to reach right into the lorry. Once they have passed through incoming goods inspection and scanning the garments are conveyed into the storage area on level 2 and 3 by a powered conveyor. They remain here in the suspended goods bay until they are requested by one of the branches. Staff then push the Mini-trolleys with the ready-sorted garments to the shipping zone on the ground floor where they are distributed to their respective loading gates.

Solution implemented

Mini-trolley system

The mini-trolley is a re-interpretation of the classic trolley concept. The goods carrier has been reduced right down to its basic function - the manual handling of hanging goods - and thanks to the use of modern material is relatively inexpensive to produced from reinforced plastic. The system is completely modular in design making it simple to create a manual trolley solution. It includes a reversible conveyor for overcoming different levels.
